Location: Indian Coast Guard premises, Visakhapatnam, India
Capacity: 1,50,000 liters per day (approx. 150 m³/day)
Executing Agency: Central Public Works Department (CPWD)
Regulatory Compliance: Followed all norms suggested by Pollution Control Board
Background: Visakhapatnam, a key port city on the eastern coast of India, hosts various defense establishments, including the Indian Coast Guard. As part of its infrastructure development and environmental stewardship initiatives, the Indian Coast Guard identified the need for a modern sewage treatment plant (STP) to manage wastewater effectively within its premises. The project was essential not only to comply with environmental regulations but also to mitigate pollution and ensure sustainable water management practices.
Limited Space: The installation of a robust sewage treatment system within the constrained area of the Coast Guard premises posed spatial challenges.
Environmental Compliance: Strict adherence to pollution control norms set by the Pollution Control Board (PCB) was mandatory to avoid any adverse environmental impact on the surrounding areas, including marine ecosystems.
Operational Efficiency: Ensuring the STP could handle fluctuating loads effectively, considering the dynamic operational nature of the Indian Coast Guard facilities.
Design and Technology: CPWD, in collaboration with environmental engineering experts, designed a compact sewage treatment plant capable of treating 1,50,000 liters of wastewater per day. The design integrated advanced treatment processes suitable for handling domestic sewage, including screening, biological treatment (activated sludge process), and tertiary treatment (such as disinfection).
Space Optimization: Given the space constraints, the STP was designed vertically, utilizing advanced compact treatment units and efficient layout planning to maximize treatment capacity within the available footprint.

Compliance and Monitoring: Throughout the project execution, stringent adherence to PCB guidelines was maintained. Regular monitoring and testing of treated effluent ensured compliance with prescribed discharge standards, safeguarding local water quality and marine environments.
Sustainability Features: The STP incorporated energy-efficient components and optimized operational strategies to minimize environmental footprint and operational costs over its lifecycle.

Compliance and Reputation: By adhering to PCB norms and achieving efficient treatment outcomes, the project has enhanced the Coast Guard's compliance credentials and environmental stewardship reputation
Operational Efficiency: The STP's reliable performance ensures sustainable wastewater management within the premises, supporting uninterrupted operational activities of the Indian Coast Guard.
Community Impact: The project contributes to broader community welfare by promoting sustainable water management practices and setting a benchmark for other defense establishments and institutions in the region.
The sewage treatment plant project at the Indian Coast Guard, Visakhapatnam, exemplifies a successful collaboration between governmental agencies and environmental engineering expertise. Through meticulous planning, adherence to regulatory standards, and deployment of advanced treatment technologies, the project has not only addressed wastewater management challenges but also demonstrated commitment to environmental sustainability and regulatory compliance.
